Radius Artwork Installation Radiates at Denbies
A new artwork Radius has been installed at Denbies estate. Commissioned by Surrey Hills Arts, this was co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and forms an undulating weave of English oak reflecting the shapes and surroundings of the Surrey Hills landscape. A seating bench follows the curves, where viewers can sit and look onto the hillside and vistas that surround them.
Inspiring Views Programme
Part of the Inspiring Views Programme, Radius aims to restore hidden viewpoints within the Surrey Hills through innovative and sculptural seating. Made from locally sourced wood, James Tunnard, artist who created Radius, commented: “Radius is about creating a place to pause for a moment, for visitors to enjoy the view and contemplate the sculpture and poetry inspired by it.”
Along with the inspiring views from the artwork’s seating area, viewers can also find poems written by local poets and inscriptions from the general public etched onto the wood. These writings will be inspired from the natural surroundings of the Surrey Hills and offer a moment of reflection for this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The work extends beyond its physical location, with the local community encouraged to create their own artworks for ‘Views from The Bench’. Films, further poems, talks, creative activities, guided walks will engage local communities to enjoy this viewpoint in the Surrey Hills AONB.
Surrey Nature for Health and Wellbeing
Undeniably, nature has positive benefits to your health and wellbeing. Denbies vineyard is open access with footpaths weaved throughout the estate connecting onto the North Downs Way. You are free to explore the vineyard and surrounding woodland to give yourself a needed boost of nature. The vineyard throughout lockdown provided as a safe haven for those in need of fresh air and space. We maintained our open access policy then and continue to now. Remember to leave nothing but muddy footprints and take only memories when exploring Denbies estate.
Facilities at Denbies Wine Estate
Walkers to Denbies Wine Estate and those along the North Downs Way are able to freely walk to the viewpoint. From the Denbies car park with free parking, take the path beside the farm shop uphill until you reach the tarmac path that is the North Downs Way. Turn left and follow this path until you find a break in the fence. The steps will lead you directly to the artwork and viewpoint.
In addition to the free parking at Denbies Wine Estate, there are also toilet facilities onsite with an Art Gallery exhibition which rotates on a weekly basis. Our Art Gallery celebrates local artists and their works with free admission.
