THE DORKING & BOX HILL AREA
Denbies Wine Estate, England’s largest and most spectacular vineyard is located on the picturesque North Downs of Dorking, Surrey. Dorking is a long-established market and later railway town in the valley of the Pipp Brook between the North Downs and the Greensand Ridge. It is approximately 21 miles (34 km) from the centre of London, in Surrey, England. It is equidistant between two high points of the hill ranges, Box Hill and Leith Hill.
Dorking is today more of a commuter settlement than ever before and has three railway stations. In 1911 it was economically described as “almost entirely residential and agricultural, with some lime works on the chalk, though not so extensive as those in neighbouring parishes, a little brick-making, water-mills (corn) at Pixham Mill, and timber and saw-mills.
The town centre is famous amongst locals and visitors for its antiques trade. West Street, said to be the oldest street in the town, is host to the majority of the antiques shops along with its charming old town pubs.
Dorking is also famous for the discovery of a new species of dinosaur. The Baryonyx was discovered in 1983. The amateur fossil hunter, William Walker, came across the new species of fish-eating dinosaur in the side of a clay pit. The skeleton can be seen at the Natural History Museum in London.
Box Hill, situated opposite to Denbies, host to the 2012 Olympic Road Race ,is the perfect place to discover a family walk and explore the beautiful Surrey Hills. Forming part of the North Downs, Box Hill has breath taking views across the surrounding countryside. Dorking is also host to many cycling and running races, with race head quarters at Denbies Wine Estate.
As a working farm and tourist destination, Denbies Wine Estate and our staff take responsibility for the environment and our surrounding Dorking nature. We support environmental groups and other charitable companies to not only help our environment but the local community.
